Android is gaining a warning system that flags incoming calls appearing to impersonate someone you already know.
Google announced the caller impersonation alert as part of a batch of AI-powered Android updates. The feature targets a specific scam pattern: a caller claiming to be a friend, family member, or colleague while dialing from an unfamiliar number. Google Photos and Google Play Books are also receiving AI updates in the same rollout, though the announcement didn't detail what those changes involve.
Impersonation is the engine behind most phone scams: grandparent fraud, fake-boss wire transfers, spoofed government agencies. Baking a warning directly into the Android dialer means users who would never think to question a suspicious call still get a nudge. That's a meaningful defense layer, even if it's a banner rather than a block.
The open question is how it works and how well. "Warn" is a lower bar than "prevent," and scammers adapt quickly once a detection pattern gets flagged. Google hasn't said whether the feature runs on-device, what signals it analyzes, or which Android versions will receive it.
