Apple is rolling out a Siri feature that reads restaurant bills through the iPhone camera and handles the split via Apple Cash.
The feature, called Siri in Camera, lets a user point their iPhone at a printed bill, select the items they ordered, and have Siri calculate their share and route payment through Apple Cash. Apple VP of Software Sebastien Marineau-Mes framed it as the fix for the familiar arithmetic headache of splitting a restaurant tab with friends. The whole flow is self-contained: camera reads the bill, Siri does the math, Apple Cash moves the money.
Apps like Splitwise and Venmo each address part of this problem, but neither closes the loop at the table — someone still has to type numbers into something after the fact. A camera-plus-payment integration that skips manual entry is a genuinely tighter solution. The obvious limitation is that it only works if everyone splitting the bill uses Apple Cash, an American-only service that requires an iPhone.
Apple has been nudging users toward Apple Cash as a Venmo rival for years with limited traction; a camera-assisted bill split is the most practically useful argument it has made for switching.
