A third-party AI agent just landed inside Apple's Messages app. It is the first one Apple has ever let in.
Poke, a third-party AI service, received Apple's approval to operate as an AI agent directly within iMessage on iPhone. Apple has kept iMessage unusually sealed: no public developer API, no bot framework, nothing like the integrations that WhatsApp, Telegram, and Android's Messages have offered for years. Whether Poke's access represents a new formal framework or a one-off exception is not clear from what Apple has disclosed.
That distinction matters. iMessage is central to daily communication for hundreds of millions of people, particularly in the US where Apple commands a majority of the smartphone market. A single approved agent could be the first step toward a proper platform opening, which would put Apple in direct competition with Meta and Google, both of which have already woven AI assistants into their messaging apps. Or it could be a narrow carve-out Apple keeps small enough to avoid the App Store scrutiny that a full messaging API would invite.
