GM has switched on vehicle-to-grid charging for GM Energy customers.
Starting now, eligible EV owners enrolled in GM Energy can use their vehicles as two-way power sources, routing electricity back to their home during an outage or, in supported setups, feeding it to the wider grid. The feature - commonly called V2G, or bidirectional charging - treats the car's battery pack as a mobile energy store rather than a one-way consumer of grid power. GM Energy, the automaker's home energy platform, handles the subscription side; the capability does not appear to be available outside that umbrella.
Utilities have spent years pushing for EVs to function as distributed grid storage, arguing that millions of cars parked and plugged in could reduce dependence on expensive peaker plants during demand spikes. GM is not first here - Ford brought vehicle-to-home capability to the F-150 Lightning first, and Nissan has offered limited V2G support on the Leaf for years - but this move extends bidirectional charging to a broader fleet across GM's lineup. Whether grid operators will actually integrate GM's system at meaningful scale is a separate, slower-moving problem.
The real test is not whether the technology works; it's whether GM Energy customers will do anything other than leave it on the default setting.
