Qingping has updated its E-ink temperature sensor with Thread support, giving Apple Home users one fewer Bluetooth device to babysit.
The Qingping thermometer was originally a Bluetooth-only sensor, notable for its E-ink display — the low-power screen technology common on e-readers that stays visible without a backlight and draws almost no energy between updates. The updated version keeps the display but adds Thread, a mesh protocol backed by Apple, Google, and Amazon. Thread lets devices route data through other nodes in the home rather than depending on a phone or dedicated hub being within Bluetooth range.
For a temperature sensor, that distinction matters more than it sounds. A Bluetooth thermometer in a spare bedroom or basement stops reporting reliably once nothing nearby can relay its signal; a Thread device hops through whatever border router — HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K — is in reach. That makes it a more trustworthy trigger for Home automations, not just a passive display.
E-ink remains a genuine differentiator in this category: most competing sensors skip the display entirely, or ship LCD panels that blank after a few seconds. The Thread upgrade arguably makes the hardware match what the display promises — a sensor that is always on and always current.
